Morton Arboretum Phenology Start - Chicago Pedway Victorian Stained Glass - Marquette Building Tiffany Mosaics - The Chicago River Turns Green - MyShadowProductions #221

Hi Everyone !! (There is a “copy” of this Post “floating” somewhere ?? I was finished 3 hours ago and ready to “Publish”, made one correction, tried to Preview and it DISAPPEARED, thankfully that is the first and hopefully the last time for that BS !! :)

In my last Post I mentioned a few “new words” for me.

Equanimous was mentioned by a friend and means calm and in control of emotions, which sounds like a great idea, right? There is an old fashioned word that can mean the same thing, COOL (maybe?)

The other two words were Phenology, the study of recurring plant and animal life cycle events driven by seasonal temperature and sunlight changes and Quercus, species of trees and shrubs belonging to the beech family (Fagaceae) commonly called OAKS.

My new volunteer opportunity at Morton Arboretum is Phenology Monitoring of eleven oak trees on a weekly+/- basis looking for breaking leaf buds, leaves growing in size, flowers, pollen, fruit (acorns), leaves changing color and fruit or leaves falling. The monitoring starts in March and continues thru November.

“My trees” include Post Oaks, Blackjack Oak, Hartwiss Oak, Black Oak, Jacks Oaks and Swamp White Oak.

Basically for me it is an incentive to get out and walk :)

Did you notice the Pine Cone Art in the Morton Arboretum video? MyShadow has some Pine Cone Art in his gallery as well :)

Do you remember my Post visiting Macy’s and the Tiffany Mosaics? In the basement at Macy’s there is an exit into a section of the Chicago Pedway that has an exhibit of Victorian Stained Glass. I walked through a very small section of the Pedway (click here for more info on the 5 miles of underground tunnels, overhead passages, etc that makeup the Chicago Pedway).

After the Pedway, I walked to the Marquette Building for a peak at the Tiffany glass mosaics depicting the Mississippi River voyage of Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet along with some brass reliefs of local Indian Chiefs.

This Video takes you there (kind of :)

Moving on, the month of March can be relatively busy if you are Irish and like college basketball. One out of two for me, I am not Irish but I do like college basketball (not the announcers, analysts, players screaming, etc..:) Go ILLINI !!

For the Irish and “wannabe Irish” the Chicago Plumber’s Union has been dying a section of the Chicago River GREEN since 1962. It is purported to be 100% eco-friendly and the color lasts several hours not days. The dyed section of the River stretches 8 blocks between Columbus Drive on the east to Orleans St to the west.

Against my better judgment I decided to venture into downtown Chicago and get my viewing spot along a railing near the DuSable bridge on Michigan Avenue at 8:30 am. The “dying” started at 10:00 am.

Click Here for my Video of the Chicago River turning GREEN !!

I was ready to leave at 10:30 or so and as I turned to leave, all I could see was people everywhere. I didn’t take any photos or videos just slowly made my way through the crowds heading west and eventually the Clark St bridge was opened for pedestrians (a lot of pedestrians!) and I made my way to Union Station to get back to Aurora :)

Online estimates for the crowds entering downtown Chicago for the River Dying and Parades on Saturday March 14, 2026 were 400,000+ people, insane !!

Garfield Park Conservatory even joined in by dying green the Fern Room pond (a first for them I think??)

Also, March 20th ushered in the first day of SPRING, Mother Nature just keeps on giving !!

So, you know what that means, probably some photos of flowers indoors and then outdoors with many unique Riots of Colors that MyShadow will try to share :)

Last year MyShadow hunted Tulips!

This year MyShadow will be hunting ……… ??

Like the Flower Buds say:

FULL BLOOM AHEAD !! ☘ 🏀
